Cala Coticcio: Complete Guide to the Archipelago's Most Beautiful Beach

In this guide
If you have looked at photos of the La Maddalena archipelago, you have probably already seen Cala Coticcio without knowing it: turquoise water, pink granite rocks sculpted by the wind and a view that has earned the nickname "little Tahiti". It is one of the best-loved and most photographed beaches in the whole La Maddalena Archipelago National Park, and for us it remains one of the most beautiful spots in the entire archipelago.
Where is Cala Coticcio
Cala Coticcio is on the island of Caprera, in the north-east, within the park's protected area. It is made up of two small twin bays separated by a rocky spur, both with pale sand and water that turns from turquoise to deep blue within a few metres.
How to get there
There are two ways to reach it:
By sea: the most convenient way, especially if you have a dinghy. This is how most visitors get there on a day trip; we also cover it in our article on the most beautiful coves to see by boat in La Maddalena.
On foot: a scenic trail starts on Caprera and crosses the Mediterranean scrub down to the cove. It is a moderately difficult hike, to be tackled with suitable shoes, enough water and preferably not in the hottest hours of the day.
Always check any seasonal access restrictions on the official website of the National Park, which over the years has sometimes regulated access to protect the area's ecosystem.
What to know before you go
There are no beach clubs, bars or facilities: bring water, snacks and everything you need.
Shade is scarce in the middle of the day: an umbrella or a UV-protection sheet makes a difference.
As it is in a protected area, the general rule of every beach in the park applies: take away everything you bring, including cigarette butts.
The best time to visit
The morning hours, before the sun is too high, give the best light for photographing the water in its most intense shades, and it is also when the cove is least crowded. If you are looking for other quiet beaches at the same time, we have written a guide to the least crowded beaches in the archipelago.
From Il Maestrale to Cala Coticcio
Staying at Il Maestrale puts you a few minutes from the port of La Maddalena, the most convenient starting point for reaching Cala Coticcio by sea. If you want to plan the day independently, our dinghy rental service reserved for guests (subject to booking and availability) is designed precisely for exploring coves like this one without time constraints. You can see all the archipelago beaches we recommend or contact us for information.
